Where can you run when you are the horror? Three masters of the uncanny, Giovanna Rivero, Kirsty Logan and Sheila Armstrong share their unsettling tales of the body and beyond.
“Rivero is a master when it comes to pushing reality to the edges (…) hers is an exceeded realism, a portrait of excess, each word shakes with desperation, madness and desire.” – María José Navia
“In sumptuous and evocative prose, Sheila Armstrong writes stories which make you go, wait, wait, what was that?” – Claire Fuller, author of Unsettled Ground
“Kirsty Logan is one of the darkest and most playful of writers working right now” – Stylist
Where can you run when you are the horror? Three masters of the uncanny, Giovanna Rivero, Kirsty Logan and Sheila Armstrong represent three international horror traditions, but many of their unsettling tales return to the body, our neighbours, and the inescapable eye of those who hold power over our lives. No matter the setting, these stories cut to the bone of our deepest fears.
Giovanna Rivero’s new collection, Fresh Dirt from the Grave, reworks the boundaries of the gothic to engage with pre-Columbian ritual, folk tales, sci-fi and eroticism, searching for the humanity in the horror. Likewise, Sheila Armstrong’s disquieting debut collection, how to gut a fish, uses her sharp, lyrical prose to find unsettling images in the Irish everyday. Also an acclaimed novelist, Kirsty Logan’s short fiction is where her ghastliest skills shine, as her recent collection Things We Say in the Dark builds an oppressive and thrilling atmosphere of dread.
Rivero, Armstrong & Logan will be in conversation with award-winning writer and teacher Deirdre Sullivan.
