“Read this book and feel furious, uplifted and galvanised to take its findings out into the world and fight for change” – Laura Bates, author of Everyday Sexism
The pressure for perfection is on, now more than ever. Authors Pragya Agarwal and Niamh Orbinski scrutinise the social norms shaping the human experience and what we can do to create a brighter future, free from damaging trends and unrealistic expectations.
In Hysterical, Pragya Agarwal dives deep into the history and science that has determined the gendering of emotions, examining the impact this has on men and women – especially the role it has played in the subjugation of women throughout history – and how a future where emotions are ungendered might look.
According to nutritionist Niamh Orbinski, meanwhile, diet culture is likewise highly driven at women, and very notably ineffective in the long term. Orbinski’s book, No Apologies, not only supports a more respectful and sustainable relationship to food, but advocates for intuitive, responsive eating, independent of the next big fad.
This event will be moderated by writer and broadcaster Louise McSharry.
