Poulaphouca / Poll na Phuca / The Daemon’s Ghost’s Hole

In the 1930s the Poulaphouca Dam and Reservoir was built as part of the Electrification scheme of Ireland. Once the reservoir was built, the Poulaphouca Waterfall stopped flowing, leaving a ghostly presence in the landscape. Its personification in Ulysses and the naming of it as “A Remarkable Cataract” in Noble and Keenan’s map of 1752 has left it immortalised in language.

The Ghost Hole Memory Bank is open to the flow of language around an absence. The memories that have been drowned by the Poulaphouca reservoir, or dried up by the nullified waterfall, or flattened by the Blessington to Terenure Tram find a home in this watery archive. Through the efforts of a single ‘lodger’ the memories of three lost residents of the area will begin to take form through language, display cases and furniture.

Aisling Ní Aodha is a Paint and Visual Culture student in NCAD. Her practice is orientated around writing and literary forms, resulting in objects that use language in sculptural or painterly manners incorporating the process of writing poetry and short stories to investigate the poetics of painting.
