Kate Thompson is one of the best known names in children's fiction, having published twelve books for children, as well as three for adult readers. Since her 1994 novel for children, Switchers, was republished three years later, she has published at least one children's book every year, among them Midnight's Choice, The Alchemist's Apprentice, The Fourth Horseman, Annan Water, her third book to win the Children's Books Ireland Bisto Book of the Year Award, and The New Policeman, described in The Guardian as a "stylish, magical book" and the winner of The Guardian Children's Book Prize, the Whitbread Children's Book Award and the Dublin Airport Authority Children's Book of the Year Award for 2005.
"The New Policeman is charming, seductive and completely enthralling. Everyone with even a passing interest in Irish music, or magic should read it." - Eoin Colfer
